Powder Ghost Towns, Part I
Here’s the first film clip from Pete Bronski’s “Powder Ghost Towns” series, featuring six abandoned Colorado ski resorts and one in Wyoming’s Snowy Range. To learn more about the Powder Ghost Towns book or buy a copy, visit Pete’s website.
Our mystery resort from Monday was Cuchara, near the Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado. Here’s the skinny from Mr. Bronski: ”Cuchara Mountain Resort, located in San Isabel National Forest in the southern Sangre de Cristos, first opened for the 1981/82 ski season. After two decades of multiple changes in ownership and several seasons when the resort didn’t open, it closed its doors for good in 2000. Locals have banded together into a recreational cooperative with the hopes of one day reopening Cuchara and operating it as a kind of Colorado Mad River Glen, but chances are it will remain a powder ghost town enjoyed by backcountry skiers willing to earn their turns on the mountain’s ski runs.”
Check back on Monday for our next mystery resort, and then next Wednesday for part two of the Powder Ghost Towns series.
